Artist Statement
Considering the dynamic meanings of everyday objects, like bricks or old jeans, I recognize that their commonly understood functions can hold deeper implications for us and our culture. As those objects are often taken for granted and overlooked, they have new meaning when placed out of context in my compositions. The bricks reflect their use as barriers or structures, as a metaphor for social barriers. I use bricks of jeans for a similar reason as they imbue social implications of class and fashion. These everyday objects can be read for what they represent to the viewer emotionally.
Therefore, I take inspiration from whatever and wherever I can. I look at everyday objects and chose a simple detail from which to start my composition, my “point of departure”.
